Plankton Check – Where Do I Find
‘Em?
Fish gather on shallow water humps, points, or other structure
to feed during the night. Search areas that hold fish during the
day. However, unproductive locations during the day regularly turn
to honey holes when the sun sinks into the horizon.
One of the best nighttime structures that attract and hold large
numbers of feeding fish would have to be the submerged islands and
offshore humps. They are often overlooked by many fishermen and
are harder to locate due to the lack of visible structure. This
means that in many cases, these unique spots receive very little
fishing pressure. You also want to target submerged islands and
offshore humps that exceed 20 feet in depth. After dark, fish will
move into the shallower water on the humps to aggressively feed.
Special Tip: Fish in general love to hang around any place where
there is a change of environment so that they can go back and forth
as needed. For example, in saltwater a great place to anchor up
would be on the border of a reef and kelp bed.
Lake “Fish Finding” Tip
The best places to fish at night are not necessarily the brushy
or weedy areas. Some of the finest spots for night fishing are sandy
or rocky inshore areas, where you can cast without fouling your
lure. Such spots rarely have any fish during the day, but after
sundown minnows swarm into them, and behind the minnows will come
all kinds of game fish.
